Prof. Anton Sculean

Anton Sculean is professor and chairman of the Department of Periodontology and currently the head of the Dental Research Center (DRC) of the School of Dental Medicine, University of Bern, Switzerland. Prof. Sculean is the author of more than 410 articles in peer-reviewed journals, 30 chapters in periodontology textbooks, and has given more than 500 lectures at national and international meetings. He is the editor of the book Periodontal Regenerative Therapy and the guest editor of the 2000 issue of Periodontology entitled “Wound Healing in Periodontology and Implantology.” Prof. Sculean serves on the editorial board of 12 dental journals and is associate editor of Quintessence International, Clinical Oral Investigations, and editor-in-chief of Oral Health and Preventive Dentistry. His H-Index on Google Scholar is 81, and on Web of Science 58. He has received many research awards, including the Distinguished Scientist Award from the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), the Anthony Rizzo Young Investigator Award from the Periodontal Research Group (PRG) of IADR, the IADR/PRG Award in Regenerative Periodontal Medicine, and the Distinguished Teacher Award from the European Orthodontic Society. Prof. Sculean has served as chairman of the IADR Periodontal Research Group, the Swiss Society of Periodontology, and the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP). Currently, he is the president of the International Academy of Periodontology (IAP).
His research interests focus on periodontal wound healing and regeneration, regenerative and plastic-aesthetic periodontal surgery, the use of antibiotics, antiseptics, and new approaches such as laser and photodynamic therapy in the treatment of periodontal and peri-implant infections.

Dott. Francesco Romano

Anton Sculean is professor and chairman of the Department of Periodontology and currently the head of the Dental Research Center (DRC) of the School of Dental Medicine, University of Bern, Switzerland. Prof. Sculean is the author of

Dr. Francesco Romano (Palermo, 1965) graduated in Dentistry in 1988 from the University of Palermo. From 1988 to 1990 he works in Milan and Monza and attends the Departments of Periodontology and Temporo Mandibular Articulation Disorders at the Clinical Institutes of Perfection of the University of Milan. He achieves among the first in Italy the qualification in the use of nonabsorbable Membranes for Guided Tissue Regeneration (Gore Tex) in February 1989, and in the use of IMZ Osseointegrated Dental Implants in March 1990 also in Milan.
Following the study group of Prof G. Carusi he attended the Internship in Periodontology Clinic and Research, June 1989 by Prof J. Lindhe (Gotheborg University – Sweden); the Annual Course in Periodontology, Clinic and Research, Jan 1989 – Jan 1990 by Prof R. Odrich (Columbia University N.Y) and the Internship in Periodontology, Clinic and Research, October 1990 by Prof Th. Karring (Aarhus University, Denmark).
In recent years he has followed Research in Periodontal and Oral Surgery, with special attention to Regenerative and Augmentative Oral Surgery of the Atrophic Maxillary and Maxillary Sinus, following the Annual Course in Oral Surgery by Prof. B. Assenza (Milan – Sept 2011 -April 2012), the Course in Advanced Implantology, by Dr. G.B. Bruschi, (Rome – Nov 2011 – Jan 2012), the Annual Course in Periodontology and Implant Surgery by Prof. G. Carusi (Rome, Sept 2011 – May 2012) and the Master in Bone Regeneration in Oral Surgery by Prof. A. Scarano, University of Chieti-Pescara, 2012-2013).
